![]() It's technically not open world, but you can fast-travel to all the areas you previously visited in the story so the map gets bigger and bigger - it's actually massive by the endgame. I was actually running into problems of being overleveled in the story because I was so invested in the optional quests. There's kind of a Far Cry "liberate bases" system with a lot of except it doesn't get old because you tend to get new support characters and a new set of sidequests from most of them. I found the character and combat systems extremely rewarding. About halfway through the major battles your ultimate move - chain attack - basically turns it into a turn-based combat system that has its own rules you have to follow to maximize damage. The combat is kind of like an MMO where you're auto-attacking and pressing buttons dedicated to individual skills when they charge up. If the fundamental gameplay loop (do sidequests, level up, customize character, do next story mission, rinse repeat with some party member bonding) don't appeal to you, I don't think XBC3 will stand out from other JRPGs.īut what it does do well is a very cool class customization system where each of the six characters can swap weapon kits or combine skills from different classes. I guess it depends why you don't like JRPGs.
